Our Autism Story – Day 2 – “The Diagnosis Aftermath”

We have a diagnosis, so…now what?!!

According to the Autism Society of Southeastern Wisconsin’s website, “autism is a lifelong neurological disorder that affects how a person perceives the world, interacts with other people and communicates.” Autism is mental condition / impairment that treatment can help but cannot cure. Various treatments in the form of intensive therapy and medication can greatly improve behavior, but will not eliminate the underlying disorder.

From the start, our intent was to work really hard to try to help Brahm live up to his greatest potential. This required flipping our lives upside down. In the year or so after Brahm’s diagnosis, we had the following major changes:

  • Kelly quit her job and started a new one to obtain coverage for Brahm’s therapy (more on that later)

  • Nick went part-time and then later completely quit his job to stay at home and help with Brahm’s therapy

  • We bought and sold houses and moved to Pewaukee to try to get into a school district that could provide great services for Brahm

  • Brahm started therapy, which entails having “strangers” in our house from about 8:30 in the morning to 7:00 at night (i.e., we live in a fishbowl, more on that later)

Long story short, we had a lot of change!
